Terry Sanford was born Aug. 20, 1917 in Laurinburg, North Carolina. His father, Cecil Leroy Sanford, was a merchant and realtor and his mother, Elizabeth Terry Martin Sanford, was a teacher. Terry was the second of three children, and was the only boy. He would grow up to become North Carolina’s first governor born in the twentieth century, and win a Purple Heart award.
