Civil Rights Tour of Durham

Tour type icon Number of stops icon 23

This project seeks to provide a chronological “walking tour” of the Civil Rights protests and demonstrations that occurred within the Durham community from the late 1950s through late 1960s. The project highlights key events such as the Howard Johnson sit in, Five Point Park march, Martin Luther King Jr.'s visits, and Woolworth’s sit-in. Overall this project hopes to provide a look into how everyday residents of Durham gave meaning and purpose to the Civil Rights movement while giving it a contemporary twist, allowing users to see where such events occurred by using a modern day map of the city.
